Ban Puppy Peddling

As a nation of dog lovers, most of us wouldn’t dream of supporting cruel puppy farms - intensive breeding facilities where dogs and bitches are treated like machines, pumping out puppy after puppy, with no regard for their welfare.

As a nation of dog lovers, most of us wouldn’t dream of supporting cruel puppy farms - intensive breeding facilities where dogs and bitches are treated like machines, pumping out puppy after puppy, with no regard for their welfare.

Yet many families are unknowingly fuelling this cruel trade. Up to 400,000 puppies are still bought from puppy farms in the UK every year.

Third party traders act as the middlemen between puppy farms and unwitting families. They tear young puppies away from mums, transport them long distances – even across borders – to be sold to families who will never know where their new puppy really came from.

Puppies sold this way often become ill, lack adequate social development, and the cost to families can be expensive and heart-breaking.

But there is hope on the horizon. Defra is currently considering the effects of introducing a ban on third party puppy sales in England. The Welsh Secretary has also called on his Government to follow Westminster’s lead and explore the potential of implementing a similar ban in Wales.

With adequate measures in place to ensure effective enforcement, a ban on third party puppy sales would provide a route to seriously addressing puppy farming in Great Britain.

Third party traders enable puppy farms by keeping them hidden from public view - especially the view of potential customers. Banning third party sales will enable buyers to view the conditions a puppy was bred in, meet the parents, and engage directly with the person who bred their new puppy. It will go a long way to protecting both dogs and consumers.

Tell your MP we need stronger protections for dogs and puppies and we must ban puppy peddling as soon as possible.

Tell your MP: Ban Puppy Peddlers

Hope is on the horizon for dogs and puppies.

The Government has recently taken several steps to improve standards for breeding and selling puppies. But they haven’t yet implemented the one measure that would be the single quickest and most effective way to end cruel puppy farming.

Ask your MP to help ban third party puppy sales.
